Local trainers. Real Salt Lake dogs.

Train Walk Poop has been helping Salt Lake City dog owners for 18 years. We're based in South Salt Lake, but our trainers work with dogs across the whole valley, from downtown apartment dogs to mountain-town hikers in Park City.

We've helped thousands of Utah families with leash pulling, reactivity, off-leash freedom, puppy potty training, and the kind of "won't-listen-anywhere" frustration that drives good dog owners to the edge. If you've tried YouTube videos and group classes and you're still struggling, you're in the right place.

Salt Lake City Dog Training FAQ

Common questions from SLC dog owners. Don't see yours? Reach out directly.

What's the leash law in Salt Lake City?
Salt Lake City requires dogs to be on a leash no longer than 6 feet on public property, including parks and trails, unless you're in a designated off-leash area. Off-leash areas include Tanner Park, Memory Grove (designated section), Lindsey Gardens, Parley's Historic Nature Park, and Herman Franks Park. Even in those areas, your dog must be under voice control, which is exactly what proper recall training gives you.
How much does dog training cost in Salt Lake City?
It varies a lot. Group classes run $150 to $300 for a 4 to 6 week course. Private lessons usually run $100 to $200 per session. Board-and-train programs (where your dog stays with the trainer) typically range from $2,500 to $6,000 depending on length and goals. The right answer depends on your dog and your schedule, our free Matchmaker Quiz helps you figure out which fits.
How long does dog training take?
For basic obedience and leash manners, most dogs make significant progress in 2 to 4 weeks of consistent work. Off-leash reliability and reactivity issues take longer, usually 8 to 12 weeks. The biggest variable isn't the dog, it's the owner's consistency. We build training plans that fit busy lives, not the other way around.
Do you offer board-and-train, or just in-home lessons?
Both. We offer in-home private lessons, board-and-train programs at our South Salt Lake facility, and dog boarding/daycare for clients. We'll help you pick what fits your dog, your schedule, and your budget on your free transformation session.
Is your training off-leash trail-friendly? My dog is reactive.
Yes, getting reactive dogs to a place where you can hike Bonneville Shoreline, Millcreek Canyon, or Park City trails without dread is one of our most common goals. The book Off-Leash Dreams for Difficult Dogs is a great place to start, it lays out the actual roadmap.
What ages do you train? What about senior dogs?
Puppies as young as 8 weeks all the way through senior dogs. Old dogs absolutely can learn new tricks, what changes is the pace and the joints, not the capacity to learn. We adapt programs accordingly.
I tried YouTube training. Why hasn't it worked?
YouTube is great at showing you techniques, but training isn't really about techniques. It's about timing, body language, and reading your specific dog. A good trainer watches you work with your actual dog and corrects the small things that videos can't see. That's why the free in-person Transformation Session matters more than another video.
Do you use e-collars / shock collars?
We use a balanced approach and select tools based on what's right for the dog and the owner. We're happy to walk through our methods on a free transformation session before you commit to anything. Our Pros & Cons of Training Programs guide covers the trade-offs honestly.
What's a "Free Transformation Session"?
It's a real, no-cost sit-down with a trainer where we evaluate your dog, identify what's actually going on, and show you the path forward. Most clients leave with at least one technique they can use that afternoon. No pressure, if we're not the right fit, we'll tell you who is.
